Did you know that April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day? If you are ready, willing, and able to bring another kitty into your home, this is a purrfect time to do it! Read on as a local Scottsdale, AZ vet offers some tips on adopting your feline friend.

Spend Time With Fluffy

Sometimes it only takes one look at a furry face to know you’ve found your pet. In other cases, choosing the right kitty can be very difficult. Spend some time with your feline buddy before signing the paperwork.

Be Prepared

Before you pick up your feline friend, you’ll need to make a run to the pet store. Fluffy will need toys, treats, bedding, dishes, a litterbox, litter, a carrier, grooming supplies, and some kitty furniture. As far as food, if you know what your pet has been eating, get that same brand to start. Consult your vet before making any changes.

Visit The Doctor

Speaking of vets, one of the first things you’ll need to do is take your furry pal to meet her new doctor. Most shelter pets are already fixed, and will be current on vaccines and parasite control. However, you’ll need to have Fluffy thoroughly examined. This is also a great time to get some tips on your new kitty’s diet and care needs!

Let Your Kitty Settle In

Major changes, like going to a new home, can be very scary for kitties. Give your new furball plenty of time to relax and settle in. How long this will take depends on the cat and on your household. If you bring home a kitten that’s going to be an only pet, it may not take her long at all to establish herself as resident feline overlord. However, if you have other pets and/or if Fluffy is shy, it will take longer to adjust. If you have more than one pet, keep them all separated at first. Make introductions slowly and carefully, and oversee all interactions.

Activate The Purr

Don’t force attention on Fluffy, no matter how cute she looks. To establish trust, it’s very important to let her come to you. However, with toys, treats, catnip, and kitty luxuries like comfy beds, you’ll have that little motor going in no time!
