Arizona isn’t exactly known for balmy summers. It can get pretty hot around here at this time of year! Heat can actually be very dangerous for dogs. Fido is wearing a fur coat, and he doesn’t have many ways to cool himself down. Read on as a North Phoenix, AZ vet offers tips on keeping your canine buddy cool in summer.

Water

First things first: make sure Fido stays hydrated. You may want to get your furry friend an automated water bowl or a pet fountain. If you have a large house, more than one dog, or a yard, set out more than one water station. These bowls will quickly begin to build up dirt and bacteria, so be sure to clean them daily. This is especially important with outdoor water stations, as they attract wildlife which can contaminate the water. (Many poisonous toads, for instance, like to sit in dogs’ water bowls.)

Climate Control

If it’s too hot for you to be outdoors, it’s definitely too hot for Fido. Keep your four-legged pal cool and comfortable indoors, in rooms with climate control.

Summer ‘Do

Some dogs are more comfortable in summer with a shorter haircut. This isn’t always the case, though. If Fido has thick fur, it’s best to leave his coat alone, as clipping it could damage his fur or cause skin issues. Ask your vet for advice.

Kiddie Pool

Splashing around in a kiddie pool is a great way to cool off on a sweltering day. Use the water for plants when Fido is done, so it doesn’t go to waste.

Cold Snack

Want to really get that tail going? Offer Fido some doggy ice cream, which you can buy in many pet stores or grocery markets. Or, make him some pupsicles by pouring water or sodium-free broth over dog treats, chew sticks, pieces of kibble, and/or shredded meat. Speaking of sodium-free broth, your pooch may enjoy a bowl of it on hot days.

Summer Schedule

Limit your dog’s outdoor time around midday, when it’s hottest out. Your canine pal will be at risk of overheating, and can easily burn his paws. Walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.
