Summer Care for Cats

Summer is here. Your cat may need some extra TLC at this time of year. The heat can be very dangerous for our feline pals. Kitties can’t sweat to cool off, and panting isn’t very effective for them. Plus, Fluffy is wearing a fur coat. Here, a local Scottsdale, AZ vet discusses keeping Fluffy cool and comfy in the summer heat.

Brushing

Cats are pretty good about keeping up with their beauty rituals, but that doesn’t mean Fluffy can’t use a little help. Brushing your furball regularly will remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will help keep her cooler.

Kitty Hammock

Hammocks are great for summer, because they are cooler than regular beds. You can make your furry pal her own kitty hammock in just a few minutes. All you need is a table with four legs and a piece of sturdy material. Cut the material so that it’s the same shape as the tabletop, but a bit smaller. Then, attach the corners to the table legs. You can also try putting a cool water bottle in Fluffy’s bed, or pointing a fan in that direction to keep the air circulating.

Water

Make sure your kitty always has plenty of water. You may want to get your furball a kitty drinking fountain or an automated waterer. If your cat is allowed outside, keep water stations outdoors as well. Wash the bowls—especially outside ones—regularly, as wild animals, including certain types of poisonous toads, can contaminate the water. On really hot days, put an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl to cool the water down.

Climate Control

The best way to keep your furry pal safe from scorching temperatures is to simply keep her indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or AC. If you do let Fluffy roam, limit her outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day.

Keeping An Eye On Fluffy

As you may have noticed, many cats like to follow their humans around and supervise them. Always check sheds, attics, and garages before you close the door. You don’t want Fluffy getting trapped inside! Don’t be surprised if your feline friend often sprawls out on kitchen or bathroom tile: these areas naturally stay cool.
