Make sure your adorable little pet has a roomy, comfy home. For one Guinea pig, you’ll need at least seven square feet. If you get more than one, you’ll need a bigger cage. Choose one with a solid floor, as wire-bottomed cages can be very dangerous to cavies. You’ll need to add a suitable substrate. Aspen is fine. You can also use fleece blankets. Avoid pine and cedar substrates, which are toxic to small pets. Your Guinea pig will also need a hidey-hole, dishes, toys, and a water bottle. A litterbox and hayrack are optional, but very useful.
Proper nutrition is very important! Your Guinea pig can have commercial food for his main meals. You’ll want to supplement this with fresh produce. Include lots of things that contain Vitamin C, which is crucial to your pet’s health. Your cavy will also need some fresh hay, such as Timothy hay. Always research a new food before giving it to your pet, as many foods are unsafe for these cute furballs. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes and suitable snacks.
Guinea pigs are very playful and curious. They also need to chew quite a bit to keep their teeth healthy. Offer your tiny buddy lots of fun toys, including plenty of suitable chew toys. Many wood, wicker, cardboard, and paper items can be repurposed into cute cavy toys. For instance, the cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls make great playthings for pocket pets. Just be careful not to give your furry friend anything with sharp edges, small parts, or dangling threads. You’ll also want to avoid items coated in paint, glitter, or dye. Ask your vet for more information.
Guinea pigs are typically very gentle and friendly, but you’ll need to pay attention to your pet to keep him properly socialized. Spend time with your furry pal every day. You may even be able to teach your cavy simple tricks!
